Understanding your knee pain symptoms is vital for ultimately finding a solution.

Location of Pain
Front of Knee: When your pain and discomfort is in the front it’s usually related to the kneecap.
You’ll notice this when kneeling, walking down stairs and after you’ve been sitting for a while.
Inside of Knee: Mostly attributed to medial meniscus and arthritis.
An MCL injury can cause pain inside the knee, too.
Meniscus tear symptoms include swelling, popping, limited joint motion, clicking and tenderness.
Symptoms of an MCL tear are pain over that ligament area, as well as bruising and swelling.
Outside of Knee: The outside of your knee is also called the lateral side. Commonly caused by lateral meniscus tears, arthritis and LCL injuries.
LCL injuries usually come with a loud snapping/popping sound at the time of injury. You’ll then notice severe pain and later swelling and tenderness. Symptoms of lateral meniscus tears are pain and swelling.
Back of Knee: This could be due to the collection of fluids that are called Baker’s Cyst. Baker’s Cyst is usually caused when conditions such as meniscus injuries, arthritis or ligament injuries cause fluid to accumulate in the knee joint, as well as chronic swelling.
Swelling & Mobility
Swelling: If you’ve never experienced a knee injury but see general swelling developing, then you may be dealing with osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis or possibly gout. The most common of the three is osteoarthritis.
If you do experience an injury and see immediate swelling then it’s possible you’re dealing with a joint structure problem, such as a shin bone fracture or ACL injury.
You probably have something less severe if your swelling occurs slowly within a few hours to days after the injury. This might indicate a ligament sprain or meniscus tear.
Mobility: If your mobility is chronically limited then you could be suffering from arthritis. If your mobility is hindered after an acute injury you may have torn something within your knee structure.
Instability & Crunching
The ligaments are responsible for stability of the knee by connecting the shin bone and thigh bone.
When the ligaments are stretched the symptom may be a feeling that your knee is giving out.
Crunching or grinding are common signs of cartilage issues where you may have a condition called chondromalacia. This can be tested and felt by placing your hand over the kneecap and bending the knee. Grinding can also be from arthritis.
Popping, clicking or snapping are quite common in many people and don’t necessarily mean you have a knee issue. If they become painful then get them checked out.
This is a situation where you can’t straighten or bend your knees. This could be due to a physical blockage of your knee or to pain that keeps you from your normal range of motion.
Effective Knee Pain Symptoms Solution
I mentioned a non-surgical, non-medication solution above. Since I like taking a holistic approach to life in general, I went out and found myself a way to improve my own knee condition that would align with that thinking.
Thinking holistically helps us see that everything is truly connected: the mindset of looking at your health, body and life as a whole instead of compartmentalized parts.
I used to suffer from chronic knee pain. I then began using a cycling solution in order to move out of the pain and misery.
