The chair is probably the only piece of furniture with a lot of history. For thousands of years it was used as a symbol of social status and dignity. The British House of Commons is among the many remaining entities that still use the chair for purposes other than just sitting.
Before the widespread use of the ordinary chair, other pieces of furniture such as stools, chests, and benches were used in meetings and public gatherings.
A few examples of early ordinary chairs exist today in public museums and private collections. Most of what we know about antique chairs comes from paintings, sculptures, and monuments.
